Daijiworld Media Network – Abu Dhabi

Abu Dhabi, Nov 26: Uber has launched fully driverless robotaxi rides in Abu Dhabi, becoming the first commercial service of its kind in the Middle East through a partnership with Chinese autonomous vehicle firm WeRide. The service went live on November 26 after two weeks of private trials and is currently operating on designated routes across Yas Island.

Riders can now book a WeRide robotaxi through UberX or Uber Comfort, with Uber also introducing a new “Autonomous” ride category—the first dedicated self-driving option on its platform anywhere in the world. The vehicles run without a safety driver and operate at Level 4 autonomy, handling all driving tasks independently within approved zones. On-board support is available for passengers through the app and an in-car tablet.

Uber and WeRide began collaborating in December 2024 in Abu Dhabi with rides that included a safety operator. The partnership expanded to Riyadh in 2025, while Uber also introduced robotaxi services in Austin, Atlanta and Phoenix through various partners. The companies plan to extend autonomous operations to more areas in Abu Dhabi, including Al Reem and Al Maryah, by the end of 2025.

WeRide, active in the UAE since 2021, now operates over 100 robotaxis in the region and was the first to receive a national licence in 2023 to test and run all types of self-driving vehicles on public roads. Globally, it has fully driverless services running in Beijing and Guangzhou, while Uber aims to expand autonomous rides to 15 more cities over the next five years.

Passengers in Abu Dhabi can boost their chances of getting a robotaxi by selecting the autonomous option in the app. The robotaxis offer hands-free travel with built-in safety protocols, including the ability to safely halt or enable manual intervention when needed.

The launch marks a major milestone for Uber and WeRide, demonstrating the growing viability of driverless transport outside the US and China.
