Getting in shape, exercising more, and eating better are all examples of the most common New Year’s resolutions people make each year.
For those of us who have fallen off the health and wellness wagon, getting back in shape can be an especially difficult task.
Dr. Alexis Colvin, a professor of orthopedic surgery at Mount Sinai Health System in New York City, told Fox News Digital five ways to get back in shape this year.

Before starting anything, Colvin recommended talking to your doctor to make sure you’re healthy enough to exercise.
“If you don’t exercise regularly or haven’t had a health check recently, we recommend talking to your GP to discuss how to safely transition to exercise,” she said. .

1. Create an exercise schedule
Colvin suggested scheduling exercise time during the day to make sure you do it.
With busy schedules at the beginning of the year, Colvin recommended making time for physical activity.

“Make a schedule for exercise throughout the day, [that] I was on time to achieve my goal,” she said.
2. Be specific about your training.
Colvin says it’s wise to “be specific about what you want to do and combine it in a way that makes you look forward to it.”

She said being particular about what you exercise on a given day can be very effective in maintaining your goal of being active.
Colvin also suggested trying something you’ve never done before, like taking a Pilates class or running a race.

“Consider ways to hold yourself accountable, such as hiring a training partner or trainer,” Colvin says.

Having someone who understands your goals and wants to see you succeed can be helpful when you start to feel like getting back in shape this year might be harder than you originally planned.
4. Consistency is key
Colvin said staying consistent with his workouts could be the key to ensuring he gets back in shape in 2024.

Short activity sessions, such as going for a walk or taking the stairs instead of the elevator, can also help you stay active.
“Even short-term activity can count towards your daily activity level,” she said.

5. Do aerobic exercise and strength training
“Working on both aerobic exercise and strength training is critical to a complete approach to physical fitness,” Colvin says.
The surgeon said both of these types of exercise are essential to your fitness journey, and it’s important to combine the two.

“Strength training is especially important to help build and/or maintain bone density,” she said.
Colvin said that by practicing the two together, he could be back in shape in 2024.
