FREMONT – A shelter-in-place order was issued Friday in Fremont following an ammonia leak at an ice factory, officials said.
The leak was first reported around 10:30 a.m. at Arctic Glacier Ice, 43960 Fremont Road, according to the Fremont Fire Department. When crews arrived, they found a large cloud over the evacuated businesses and employees.
Shortly before noon, authorities issued a shelter-in-place order for areas west of Fremont Boulevard, north of South Grimmer Boulevard, east of South Grimmer Boulevard and south of Auto Mall Parkway. The order lasted until 1 p.m.
Officials said crews “stopped the external leak” after confirming it was limited to ammonia.
No injuries were reported.
The cause of the leak is under investigation. The business was not open as of Friday, authorities said.
“FFD hazardous materials inspectors will continue to communicate with facility personnel to ensure operations can fully resume operations,” the department said.
This is a report under development. Please check the latest information.
