Author Daniel James Brown came to Park City in 2015 because his best-selling book, “The Boys in The Boat,” was a Community One Book. He told how his neighbor invited him to see his sick father, who was in the last weeks of his life. Joe Lantz recalled his childhood experiences alone during the Great Depression and the circumstances that put him on a ship trying to win an Olympic gold medal.
It seems natural that Joe would be the central character in the story, but when Brown asked permission to tell Joe’s story, he said,he can write a story about all Boys on the boat. ” Hence the title.
Author and director George Clooney masterfully builds suspense, tension, and fear as each chapter faces and overcomes its own obstacles.
Two parallel stories are being told. One story depicts the struggles of lower-middle-class youth who use sports to compete with those from higher classes who seem to have no obstacles in their lives. Joe and his teammates endure with all their strength and stamina, becoming one collective machine and proving there is strength in unity.
Another story depicts what is happening in America, the Great Depression, difficult times, and what is happening in Europe – the rise of Hitler and his Third Reich. Some of the political comments made during the film are subtle, but they do exist. A book could detail the German efforts to cover up the harsh and inhumane treatment of Jews and other minorities. This movie shows that evil exists and is powerful. Berlin’s majestic Olympic Stadium is a beautiful structure, but it carries a Nazi flag instead of an Olympic or international flag, giving it an undeniably sinister vibe.
A great cast of young actors. I cheered for them all along the way. You will too.
If you’re as intrigued by this story as I am, you’ll want to find out more. Read this book if you haven’t already, and check out his PBS documentary called “The Boys of ’36.”
“The Boys in the Boat” is rated PG-13 and has an exhilarating running time of 2 hours and 4 minutes. It has been shown in theaters nationwide since Christmas Day.
