Too many people, especially in the business world, think it’s all about being tough, tough, ambitious, or having guts and taking revenge. Some of them may be valuable, but that’s not where we as a collective are lacking. We solve “difficult” problems.
What we are missing is in the micro-moments. It’s about showing yourself grace when things don’t go your way. It means forgiving difficult colleagues, limiting your time with friends who don’t make you feel your best, taking full responsibility for your life and not blaming family and relatives for your faults. It’s also about overlooking the people who boo you. Ed, you. All these micro moments truly open the door to macro happiness.
I have answered this big question for you many times. How can I become a bigger person?
So many of you are unhappy right now, at this very moment, because you feel blamed and as a result feel a lack of control. Negative thoughts around you can cause very bad things. If we could support positivity instead of avoiding it, we would all be happier.
There were a lot of people who booed me along the way, people who didn’t want me to succeed. Long before I was known to the world as Gary Vee, there was a wine supplier who said horrible things to me and flat-out lied to me, hurting me as a human being. I went to an event in New York to sample his wines, and he said, “Get out of here…you guys are the ones doing everything wrong in the wine business.” That was probably the most humiliating experience I’ve ever had as a human…and not too long after that, when Wine Library TV blew up on the internet, he emailed me… He acted like nothing had happened and asked me to appear on my show to get exposure for his brand…
…and you know what I said? of course! That’s because I was raised to disproportionately triple my choice of happiness and inner peace so that I could become a greater person. The answer lies in knowing that being the bigger person is always the right thing to do.
To be clear, this is not about applying kindness and forgiveness to the most dramatic scenarios or important moments in life. It means having that kind of mindset even when it comes to the trivial things in daily life.
Here’s a small example to explain it.
In our daily lives, there will likely be scenarios where someone might hurt your feelings or do something that you find unpleasant. In that environment, you’re likely to do something mean back to them… What I want you to do is do the opposite, that’s what I want.
I want you to have compassion and empathy for them when they expect you to be mean to them. you know why? Hurt people, hurt people!
When someone is not kind, it is because they are hurt. That’s why you need to be twice as nice to that person and see what happens.
@garyvee When you feel “hate” it’s easy to spew more hate back. Try doing the opposite. Let’s spit back love in the face of hate. Then we can turn this shit around!!♬ Original song – Gary Vaynerchuk
It’s always cool to be a big person, and it’s always true! We need to consciously incorporate that mindset into our lives so that we can collectively enjoy life more. Try it and see what happens.
