JOPLIN, Mo. — Most people know it as red meat allergy. It develops after being bitten by some types of ticks.
Now, a local chiropractor says he has discovered a successful way to treat this tick-borne disease.
“I went to the dermatologist. I went to the doctor. At first they thought it was like a really bad chigger rash. Then they stopped me from thinking it was a chigger rash. Then it spread to other places and no one could figure out what it was,” said Seneca resident Angela Clark, who was diagnosed with alpha gal.

AGS is a potentially life-threatening allergic reaction caused primarily by bites by the “Lone Star” tick.
According to the Mayo Clinic, AGS causes people to be allergic to red meat and mammalian products.
And Clark says it’s not just red meat that causes problems.
“What I’ve noticed is that I have to avoid certain lotions and certain shampoos. I also have allergies, so that makes it a little bit harder as well. So in my case, I avoid red meat. “But the other thing that I, like a lot of people, am very sensitive to is not being able to consume enriched flour,” Clark said.
And on top of dealing with allergies, Clark says the cost of the substitute food she has to buy has more than doubled.
“People who have Alphagal buy fortified unbleached flour, which means instead of being able to go buy a bag of flour for $4 for $3, it costs $8 to $10 a bag. It’s going to take a while,” Clark said.
And Clark says there are many products that contain mammalian-derived ingredients that we may not have thought of.
“So if you go to a fast food restaurant or a restaurant and you get a sweet tea, the typical sugar you find there is processed using charred mammal bones,” Clark said.
And now eating out seems different for Clark.
“But I have to say, no cheese, no dairy. That’s why, as a family, we don’t go out as much as the kids. Sometimes I order and their and if I do that, get stuff for me. Very simple thing. But you have to worry about cross-contamination. You know, it’s like a fast food restaurant. . . . I won’t say names because I don’t want to throw them under the bus. But, you know, there are things that I can’t use, especially the beef flavoring in the fries,” Clark said. .
Clark says she hasn’t tried anything yet, but local clinics are working on treating allergies.
Dr. Skaggs and his team studied the use of hyperbaric oxygen therapy as a treatment for AGS and submitted their research for publication.
Dr. Skaggs said he is seeing an increase in patients coming to his clinic with AGS.
“We are 100% successful in getting patients back to eating red meat. Right now, in this four-state area, we are being invaded by an army of tiny little ticks, and they are We need to understand that they are targeting each and every one of us,” he said.
