Israel’s parliament, the Knesset, on Monday passed a law allowing the government to temporarily shut down foreign news networks deemed a national security threat, The Times of Israel reported.
The law, known as the “Al Jazeera Law,” is aimed at shutting down Israel’s popular Arabic-language news channel, Al Jazeera, the newspaper said. (Related: Al Jazeera spies on American Jews for documentary to premiere soon)
The law itself reportedly allows for a 45-day closure, but could be extended by an additional 45 days.
“There will be no freedom of speech for Hamas spokespeople in Israel. Al Jazeera will be shut down in the coming days,” Israeli Communications Minister Shlomo Karhi tweeted in Hebrew, using the freedom of the press to protect Israel’s security and protect Israel.
