Augusta’s Veterans Affairs and Legal Affairs Committee is scheduled to hold a public hearing on the National Popular Vote Interstate Compact this Monday, January 8, at 10 a.m. The bill has received an early start since it was introduced last year. As our state government begins its new session, which we are so grateful to have.
Passage of this bill will have a positive impact on Maine. First, candidates for public office would benefit from holding campaign events in the state, which is now rare, and would bring in additional revenue. Voters in every state will matter, not just the most populous states. One person, one vote is a principle we can all agree on, and the person coming to occupy the Oval Office must be the person voted for by the majority of the American people.
By joining this compact, Maine empowers itself and empowers its residents. We would all do ourselves a favor by sending words of support to Augusta, our representatives, and the Veterans Affairs and Legal Affairs Committee.
