Salmadi, based in Cairo, Egypt, yesterday launched a new Arabic news website called Mujaz.me (Mujaz stands for the abbreviation). I don’t see any purpose for this investment other than as a testbed for mobile web development.
I remember that Arabic news websites became popular in the region in the mid-2000s, and the most successful ones were still ones like Elaph and Serialnews.
Sarmadi, Vodafone Egypt’s mobile advertising and development arm, appears to have just now realized that it would be beneficial to enter the Arabic news aggregation industry.

The launch follows in the footsteps of regional giant Yahoo!. Maktoob’s news homepage makeover shows one interesting feature that other portals will hopefully learn from. Fully featured mobile version.
Although the portal functions as an Arabic-only news aggregator, it is difficult to understand how the news is collected and displays it in a Digg-like interface that pulls the information from the original publisher’s website to Mujaz. It is unclear whether Sarmady is paying fees. Similar consumption techniques to Digg, but without the ability for users to dig.
What Mujaz.me staff is most proud of is that the user interface is optimized for any mobile phone. We tested it on HTC Desire, Nokia, and several other devices and found the best features and display on the Nokia.
The authors of Mujaz have chosen to provide a shortened version of the news article when you click on the headline from the homepage, providing a “Click here for more information” link, which worked for us. did not do it.
I don’t think Mujaz is innovative in terms of the mechanism by which content is consumed. It certainly has advantages over other portals like Yahoo! Maktoob and CnnArabic.com. These Arabic portals, unlike international portals, do not even offer a mobile version.
So, if you’re looking for a way to watch Arabic news on your mobile, you might want to try Mujaz.me.
