It’s been almost a full week into the new year, and you may be starting to realize what you decided to quit at the beginning of January. From e-cigarettes to alcohol to chocolate to saying yes to everything.
And perhaps, in order to break the vice, we look for a replacement when the craving begins.
But experts have issued a warning about snus, saying it is becoming even more popular than e-cigarette use.
For those of you who aren’t already in the group chat, snus is basically a tobacco product that looks like a little tea bag pillow.
Originating in Sweden, cigarettes have long been popular in Scandinavia (in fact, they are the most common type of tobacco product in Norway) and have become increasingly popular among young people in the UK over the years.
Snus is illegal in all countries of the European Union (EU) except Sweden, Australia, and New Zealand.
Place a small bag of dry tobacco under the person’s lips for about 30 minutes. It is often compared to disposable tobacco tea bags.

Nicotine pouches do not contain tobacco as Swedish snus is banned in the UK.
However, because it is nicotine, it is addictive.
But Libby Clark, managing consultant in toxicology, told Cosmopolitan: “Nicotine from oral products is absorbed more slowly than from inhaled products such as cigarettes or e-cigarettes, so it is thought to have less addictive potential.”
A dental surgeon took to TikTok to warn users about the effects of snus, which is applied to the gums while using the pouch.
“But this is how you get lesions on your gums,” insisted a London dentist.
He then shows us a pretty gross close-up of his gums. The gums are sore and torn, and parts of the white skin appear to be peeling off. Yeah, that’s terrible.
He added: “Some studies even suggest that this may be a pre-cancerous condition.
“Snus can cause gum recession, which can lead to gum inflammation and periodontal disease.”

According to the Cleveland Clinic, gingival recession is a type of periodontal disease in which the gum tissue separates from the teeth, exposing the roots underneath. This can make your teeth more susceptible to cavities and more sensitive.
There isn’t a lot of data on how safe snus is at this point, but while nicotine pouches should theoretically be better for your health than cigarettes, they’re still clearly not good for your health. .
Pharmacist Ian Budd added to Cosmo:
“Because snus contains nicotine, it is considered an addictive substance because it is the nicotine in tobacco products that causes addiction in the first place.
“While research is still ongoing, some studies have shown that it may be associated with increased rates of pancreatic cancer, heart failure, and diabetes.”
